How to Change Default Programs for File Types
In Windows, a default program is the application that automatically opens a specific file type. For example, .docx files might open in Microsoft Word by default. You can change the default program if you prefer another application, like LibreOffice Writer, for that file type. This makes it easier and faster to open your files with your preferred software.
Change the Default Application
- Open Settings:
- Click on the Start button or press the Windows key on your keyboard.
- Select Settings (the gear icon) from the Start menu.
- Go to Default Apps:
- In the Settings window, click on Apps in the left sidebar.
- Click on Default apps.
- Search for the File Type:
- In the Enter a file type or link type search box, type the file extension, for example .docx (for Microsoft Word).
- Choose a New Default App:

- You will see the .docx file type appear in the search results.
- Click on the current default app icon next to the .docx file extension.
- A list of available applications will appear in a pop-up window.

- Select the application you want to use as the default for .docx files.
- Confirm Your Choice:
- Click the Set default button to confirm your choice. The new default application will now be set for .docx files.
